Dr. Marianne Klerk

Biography

Marianne Klerk is a Senior Lecturer in the Humanities at Erasmus University College. Her research interests lie at the intersection of history and public discourse, examining how early modern warfare impacted society. She focuses on various subjects within this field including political thought and military history, and is particularly interested in how history influences current understanding and vice versa. An example of her work includes analyzing the deeply rooted 'culture war' in the early modern Dutch Republic and attempting to bridge the gap between visions of tolerance in a small republic during the 'Golden Age' and the harsh realities of global empire fueled by violent conquest and slavery. Additionally, Klerk is involved in journalism and editorial work, addressing issues such as gentrification, equality, and identity in Rotterdam. She has a passion for teaching, and her commitment to public engagement and interdisciplinary research is a central part of her academic career.
