Biography

Marie-Joëlle Zahar is a researcher and Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Montreal. Her research focuses on political violence, particularly as it relates to non-state armed groups and their interactions with civilian populations. Over the past decade, she has studied how these groups organize and control territories, as well as the conditions under which various actors in internal conflicts may return to violence. Zahar's work challenges widely accepted notions regarding political violence during transitional periods and explores the characteristics of mediation processes that facilitate peace negotiations. She has conducted comparative research across multiple regions, including the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Balkans, including efforts to support the organization of elections and inclusion of civil society representatives in peace negotiations post-conflict. Zahar is affiliated with several research initiatives, including the Centre for International Studies and Research at the University of Montreal and the International Peace Institute in New York.
