Biography

Marie E. Burns is a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science at UC Davis Health. She is a trained biochemist and electrophysiologist whose research focuses on the temporal regulation of signal transduction mechanisms in neurons. Her work has investigated the deactivation of G protein cascades in photoreceptor cells of the retina. Dr. Burns's future studies aim to understand the mechanisms by which G protein cascades yield signals of varying amplitudes and durations in rod and cone photoreceptors. Her academic interests include studying the health and disease of photoreceptors in the retina, as these cells' degeneration leads to an inflammatory response that further damages retinal tissues. The Burns Lab is dedicated to understanding inflammation and harnessing this knowledge to mitigate damage in retinal degenerative diseases. Her outstanding contribution to the field has been recognized through numerous awards, including the Faculty Service Award from the Neuroscience Graduate Group in 2015 and the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award in 2013.
