Dr. Marie Carriere

Biography

Marie Carriere is a Professor in the Department of English & Film Studies at the University of Alberta. With degrees in Comparative Literature, English, and French Literature, Carriere's academic focus encompasses Canadian and Québécois literatures, especially contemporary fiction and poetry. She directs the Canadian Literature Centre and has taught a range of courses blending literature, critical theory, and feminist studies. Her research explores feminist and queer studies, Indigenous writing, and the intersection of literature and environmental ethics. Carriere has published extensively, including books on metafeminist practices and articles examining the nuances of care within literature. Her current work investigates ecological poetics and the intersections of feminism and crisis literature. She has been involved in major research initiatives, including SSHRC-funded projects examining the interplay of feminist environmental theory and literary practices. Marie Carriere is deeply engaged with her academic community and particularly enjoys mentoring students in their literary explorations. Outside of academia, she enjoys reading, music, hiking, skiing, and spending time with family and friends.
