Marie Murphy graduated with a BA Hons in Sport & Leisure from Ulster and later earned a PGCE in Physical Education. She holds an MSc in Sports Science and a PhD in Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University. Marie is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES), and the Higher Education Academy. She chairs the Europe Health Enhancing Physical Activity Steering Committee (HEPA Europe) and is a member of the Board of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH). Marie has served on the sub-panel for Sport and Exercise Sciences and Leisure Tourism in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 and was the Chair of the sub-panel for REF2021. Her research focuses on the effects of physical activity and exercise, particularly walking, on health, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach that includes various outcome measures ranging from behavioral to biochemical. With over 140 peer-reviewed publications, she has contributed to the evidence base underlying current physical activity guidelines in the UK and Ireland, co-authoring the guidelines produced by the Chief Medical Officers in 2011 and 2019. Marie is also a member of the Chief Medical Officers Expert Advisory Group for physical activity, leading the preparation of new UK Physical Activity Guidelines for adults. Additionally, she holds a joint appointment as a Professor of Exercise Health at Ulster University.
