Biography

Marie Nightbird is an Associate Professor Teaching in the School of Social Work at the University of British Columbia (UBC). With over 25 years of experience, Marie is committed to Indigenous initiatives and reconciliation. Her heritage includes Saulteaux, Sioux, and Ukrainian ancestry, and she has devoted her career to working within Indigenous-focused social work, focusing on healing and wellness. Marie has taught courses in both the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, with an emphasis on interpersonal communication, group work skills, and field placements for Indigenous students. In addition, she has served as an Indigenous student advisor and has contributed to the Indigenization and decolonization of the School of Social Work. Prior to her professorship, Marie held various roles including Education Coordinator at the Centre of Excellence in Indigenous Health and was involved in community-based programs addressing Indigenous family preservation and wellness. Registered as a Clinical Social Worker, her private practice has focused on serving residential school survivors and those impacted by historical colonization. Marie aims to create pathways that honor the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples through her teaching and scholarship.
