Biography

Marie C. Schölmerich joined ETH Zürich in August 2023 as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Environmental Microbiology at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics within the Department of Environmental Sciences. She was born in Berlin, Germany, and completed her B.Sc. in Biochemistry at Leipzig University in 2011, followed by an M.Sc. in Molecular Biosciences in 2013 and a Ph.D. in Biology in 2018 at Goethe University Frankfurt. From 2018 to 2020, she served as a junior group leader at Hamburg University before becoming a Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley, CA, USA, from 2021 to 2023. Her research focuses on Anaerobic Microbiology, Environmental Metagenomics, Microbial Physiology & Metabolism, and Protein Biochemistry. She is currently involved in multiple projects, including a grant from the Messerli Foundation and an SNSF Starting Grant. Schölmerich is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Microbiology and the International Society for Microbial Ecology.
