Biography

Marie C. Schölmerich joined ETH Zürich as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in August 2023, focusing on Environmental Microbiology within the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics. She was born in Berlin, Germany, and earned her B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Leipzig University in 2011, followed by an M.Sc. in Molecular Biosciences and a Ph.D. in Biology from Goethe University Frankfurt in 2013 and 2018, respectively. Prior to her current role, she was a junior group leader at Hamburg University from 2018 to 2020 and a Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley from 2021 to 2023. Her research interests include Anaerobic Microbiology, Environmental Metagenomics, Microbial Physiology & Metabolism, and Protein Biochemistry. She has several ongoing projects funded by the Messerli Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) to explore microbial methane cycling and other aspects of microbial ecology.
