Professor Mariek Schmidt is a geologist with a focus on igneous volcanic rocks on Earth and Mars. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Geology from Colby College in Maine and completed her Ph.D. at Oregon State University, where she researched the eruptive history and geochemistry of volcanic rocks in the Oregon Cascade Range. Since 2005, she has been actively involved in Mars research, initially as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, contributing to the Mars Exploration Rover mission. She joined Brock University's Earth Sciences Department in 2009, where she established a research program focused on the eruptive and environmental histories of volcanic fields on both Earth and Mars. Schmidt was selected as a NASA Participating Scientist for the Mars Science Laboratory mission and continues to work with the Mars 2020 rover mission. Her ongoing research also includes terrestrial studies of volcanic fields in Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada, and Iceland.
