Biography

Mariel Borowitz is an Associate Professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Director of the Georgia Tech Center for Space Policy and International Relations. Her research deals with international space policy issues, international cooperation, and competition in Earth observation, along with the strategic aspects of moon exploration and space safety, sustainability, and security. Borowitz has published works in prestigious journals such as Science, Strategic Studies Quarterly, and Space Policy, and is the author of the book “Open Space: Global Effort Open Access Environmental Satellite Data,” published by MIT Press. Her research has been supported by multiple grants including those from the National Science Foundation and NASA. She is currently detailed to the U.S. Office of Space Commerce where she is the Director of International Space Situational Awareness Engagement. In this role, she focuses on the development and implementation of approaches for international coordination in space situational awareness and space traffic coordination. Previously, she worked as a policy analyst at NASA and has extensive experience in space policy and international security.
