Dr. Marielle Engelen

Biography

Marielle Engelen is a Professor and Co-director at the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity at Texas A&M University. Her research primarily focuses on clinical nutrition, metabolism, functional performance, and the impacts of aging on chronic diseases, particularly in relation to muscle wasting and dysfunction. She employs stable isotope methodologies to investigate metabolic disorders and how nutritional interventions can enhance physical and cognitive performance in patients suffering from chronic wasting diseases such as COPD, cancer, and cystic fibrosis. She has coordinated various clinical trials and supervised numerous studies examining the effects of protein and amino acid interventions in aging populations. Dr. Engelen has published extensively in her field and holds editorial positions with respected journals in clinical nutrition and metabolism. Her academic journey began with a degree in Health Sciences from Maastricht University, where she later completed her PhD. She has a wealth of experience, having worked in various capacities in clinical and academic settings, including as an assistant and associate professor in geriatrics at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences. Engelen is recognized for her pioneering research and contributions to understanding nutritional needs in clinical populations, making significant strides in improving patient outcomes through tailored dietary strategies.
