Dr. Marietta Meier

Biography

Marietta Meier is a Titular Professor in Modern History at the University of Zurich. She has been leading the study and teaching section of the Historical Seminar since September 2019. Her research focuses on the history of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, with current emphases on the history of time, knowledge, science, psychiatry, and emotions, particularly in relation to sexual abuse. She is involved in various research projects, including one on sexual abuse by Catholic clergy in the canton of Uri, running from 2025 to 2027, and another examining sexual abuse within the Catholic Church of Switzerland, ongoing from 2022 to 2026. Meier has directed a project on drug trials conducted at the psychiatric clinic in Münsterlingen from 2016 to 2019. Her academic journey includes significant positions such as a research assistant at the Historical Seminar from 1994 to 1998 and scientific collaborator at Collegium Helveticum from 2006 to 2009. She earned her doctorate in 1997 and habilitated in 2012, solidifying her expertise in the historical narratives of psychiatry and societal issues. She is also a member of several academic societies, including the Swiss Society for History and the Society for Social and Economic History.
