Biography

Marietta van der Tol studied at Utrecht University earning honors in Law and a Master’s in History from 2009 to 2014, followed by a Master’s degree from Yale University focusing on the history of Christianity from 2014 to 2016. She completed her doctoral thesis titled 'Politics of Religious Diversity: Toleration, Religious Freedom, and the Visibility of Religion in Public Space' at the University of Cambridge in 2020. Marietta joined the Blavatnik School of Government in 2020 as the inaugural Alfred Landecker postdoctoral research fellow and subsequently took on roles as a Junior Research Fellow at New College, Oxford, and a College Lecturer in Comparative Politics at St Peter’s College, Oxford. Her ongoing research focuses on interdisciplinary networks regarding religion and politics in German, Dutch, and Anglo-American contexts while also examining the impact of right-wing movements on minority protections across Europe. Marietta leads a five-year research project on the political imaginaries of Russian, Hungarian, and Serbian identities and their implications for concepts of democracy as influenced by religious beliefs and national narratives. Her teaching includes courses on democratic resilience, political policies, and the intersection of politics and religion.
