Mariken van der Velden is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and co-Director of the Resilience, Security Civil Unrest (ReSCU) Research and Innovation Lab. She obtained her Ph.D. in Political Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research interests include political communication, political behavior, and computational social science, with a focus on applying advanced computational methods to study political rhetoric and its effects on decision-making in multi-party systems. She is currently examining the legitimacy of political decision-making in her research projects, which have received funding from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). In addition to her academic role, she actively engages with societal challenges facing democracies today, including the crisis of representative democracy and increasing political fragmentation.
