Dr. Marilena Loizidou

Biography

Marilena Loizidou is a leading researcher in Cancer Nanotechnology, serving as the Deputy Director of the Division of Surgery and Interventional Science at University College London (UCL). She completed her undergraduate training in Biochemistry at McMaster University, Canada, and obtained her PhD in Solid Tumor Biology and Pharmacology from the University of Southampton, where she later became the lead clinical scientist. In 2013, she transitioned to UCL, where she took on the role of Head of the Department of Surgical Biotechnology. Her research primarily focuses on utilizing nanotechnology tools in cancer pharmacology, with an emphasis on developing novel imaging and targeted therapeutics for solid tumors, particularly colorectal cancer. She is also known for co-inventing tumouroids, which are 3D in vitro cultures that mimic the composition and architecture of solid tumors, thus providing a platform for stratified therapeutics in precision medicine. Additionally, Marilena is the Co-Founder and Director of the MSc in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine, as well as the MSc in Surgical Interventional Sciences.
