Biography

Marilyn N. Raphael is a Professor in the Department of Geography and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She has served as the past director of the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and was the Department Chair from 2010 to 2013. Her primary research focuses on Southern Hemisphere atmospheric dynamics and climate change. She aims to characterize Antarctic sea ice variability and understand the interaction between Antarctic sea ice and large-scale Southern Hemisphere circulation, with a focus on seasonal, interannual, and decadal time scales. Her work includes global climate modeling with an emphasis on improving simulations of sea ice and the atmosphere in the Southern Hemisphere. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and currently chairs the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research's expert group on Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt). Additionally, she co-chairs the World Climate Research Programme’s Polar Climate Predictability Initiative (PCPI) and has served on the National Research Council’s Committees addressing future science opportunities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean stabilization targets for atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations.
