Biography

Marina Botto is a Professor of Rheumatology at Imperial College London, where she is the Head of the Department of Immunology and Inflammation and the Director of Bioservices. She qualified in Rheumatology in Italy before moving to the UK to complete her academic training. In 2009, she was elected as a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor Botto has authored over 200 original publications focusing on the pathogenesis of the complement system in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Her research program aims to understand how complement deficiencies contribute to autoimmunity, particularly in SLE. Over the years, she has developed in vivo models of complement deficiency to elucidate the role of complement in SLE, renal diseases, and cancer metabolism. She has pioneered research on the role of complement component C1q in the complement system's functions related to aging, angiogenesis, and cancer immunometabolism. In addition to her research, Professor Botto has supervised over 40 students throughout her academic career.
