Biography

Marina Guizzetti is an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience at Oregon Health & Science University and a Research Biologist at the Portland VA Health Care System. Her research primarily focuses on identifying novel mechanisms of glia-neuron interactions involved in brain development and neuronal plasticity, particularly the effects of ethanol on these interactions. She examines how ethanol exposure affects glial and neuronal functioning, contributing to learning and behavioral abnormalities associated with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Guizzetti utilizes various techniques, including biochemical, morphological, epigenetic, and immunocytochemical methods, to investigate these complex interactions. Her interests extend to glycobiology and lipid research, emphasizing the role of astrocytes in modulating neuronal functions through various biochemical pathways. Guizzetti has collaborated with other faculty members and is open to mentoring new PhD and Master's students. She has several ongoing projects that explore the implications of chronic alcohol exposure and the associated molecular mechanisms affecting neurotransmission and brain health.
