Dr. Marina Mdivani

Biography

Marina Mdivani began her musical education in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1960. She graduated from the Moscow Conservatory and pursued post-graduate studies under the tutelage of Professor Emil Gilels. In 1961, Ms. Mdivani won the Premier Grand Prix at the prestigious Concours International Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud in Paris. The following year, she emerged as a winner in the historic Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which included notable prize-winners such as Vladimir Ashkenazy and John Ogdon. After completing her post-graduate studies in 1963, she toured the United States and Canada, culminating in a recital at Carnegie Hall. As a principal soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Society for twenty-five years, Ms. Mdivani's career as an orchestral soloist and recitalist has taken her across Europe, Russia, and North and South America. Her repertoire includes 40 concertos and numerous chamber works, with unique concert programs featuring multiple Prokofiev concertos. Ms. Mdivani has recorded works by Haydn, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Ovshinnikov, Weinberg, and Taktakishvili. Since 1992, she has been a successful professor of piano at McGill University, where her students have earned a solid reputation, winning competitions, scholarships, and awards.
