Biography

Mario Damen studied History at the University of Leiden and in Santiago de Compostela, subsequently gaining his PhD at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with the distinction of cum laude. He is an associate professor of Medieval History at the University of Amsterdam. Damen has authored several works, including "De staat van dienst. His publications focus on the socio-political history of the Late Medieval Low Countries, particularly nobility and tournaments, and he has published in journals such as Renaissance Quarterly and the English Historical Review. Damen leads an NWO-funded project investigating the Nassau dynasty's impact on urban space in the Low Countries during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This research explores the complex relationships between princes, nobles, and urban elites, redefining concepts of territory through administrative, architectural, and narrative sources.
