Dr. Mario Herrero

Biography

Mario Herrero is a professor at Cornell University and a Cornell Atkinson Scholar, recognized for his leadership in examining sustainable food systems and their implications for environmental and human health. His research centers on strategies for enhancing the sustainability of food systems, analyzing sources of greenhouse gas emissions, assessing food security, and advocating for healthy diets. He plays pivotal roles in international initiatives addressing food and environmental systems including as Co-Chair of the Food Systems Countdown Initiative and is involved with the EAT-Lancet Commission. Herrero has an extensive academic background including senior roles at the International Livestock Research Institute and Australia's National Science Agency. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2024 and is listed among highly cited researchers by Web Science, marking him as one of the top climate change scientists. Herrero's research spans multiple continents and involves collaborations with top international research groups, aiming to transform the agricultural landscape towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
