Biography

Mario Paolone is a Full Professor and the chair of the Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory (DESL) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). His research focuses on power systems, with particular emphasis on real-time monitoring, operational aspects, protection, dynamics, and transients. He received both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1998 and 2002. As an expert in distributed electrical systems, Paolone has made notable contributions to the field, specializing in PMU-based situational awareness and developing optimal planning and operational methods for Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). He has served as the founding Editor-in-Chief for the journal Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks and has received several awards, including the IEEE EMC Society Technical Achievement Award and recognition as an IEEE Fellow in 2022. His published works extensively cover various areas, including power distribution networks, grid integration of renewable sources, and advanced monitoring techniques.
