Biography

Mario Costa Sousa is a Professor at the University of Calgary and Associate Head of Research Planning. He has an extensive academic background in Computer Science, earning his Bachelor’s degree from the Catholic University of Petropolis in 1989, his Master’s degree from Pontificia Universidade Catolica Rio de Janeiro in 1994, and his PhD from the University of Alberta in 1999. His research focuses primarily on Computer Graphics, particularly in Non-Photorealistic Rendering, Sketch-based Interfaces & Modeling, Visualization & Visual Analytics, Modeling & Simulation, and Human-Data & Computer Interaction. He leads a multidisciplinary team investigating applied visual computing, addressing challenges across Science, Engineering, and Art/Design. His ongoing work aims to develop novel paradigms and software tools for visual computing that enable intuitive model building and analysis, enhancing understanding and addressing uncertainties in complex data sets.
