Dr. Marion Burgess

Biography

After completing a degree in physics, Marion Burgess began her career in acoustics at an Australian building research laboratory. With over 50 years of broad experience in all aspects of acoustics, she has been involved in environmental and occupational noise measurement, assessments, and control research. Although retired, she continues to engage in research, teaching, and consulting projects and works as an Honorary Associate Professor. Marion collaborates with colleagues at Kensington and Canberra campuses, contributing to both the School of Architecture and the School of Aviation and the School of Engineering and Information Technology. She has made significant contributions to understanding environmental noise and has been awarded the Order of Australia for her work in the international domain. An active member of the Australian Acoustical Society, she served as the chief editor of the Journal Acoustics Australia and is responsible for the Springer series of books published on behalf of the Society. Marion has a strong presence in international conferences and has held leadership roles such as Past President of the International Commission on Acoustics and the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering. She provides training courses via UNSW's School of Professional Studies, focusing on workplace noise assessments.
