Biography

Marion Gehlker designs content-based and campus-based inspired advanced language classes focusing on German history and culture, including themes such as multiculturalism involving Turkish Germans, Afro-Germans, Russian Jews, Russland-Deutsche, and refugees. Her courses include topics like the Kaiserreich and Weimar Republic, as well as 'Green Germany: History Culture Sustainability,' and 'Architecture, Art, and Social Justice.' Currently, she is working on the didacticization of Alina Bronsky’s novel 'Scherbenpark' for Intermediate German courses, published by Yale University Press. Gehlker teaches Advanced German, Contemporary German Culture, German Culture History Text Film, and German Reading Knowledge Research, enhancing the cultural program within her language classes through various extra-curricular activities. She has received a stipend to attend the AAUSC/CERLL Summer Workshop on implementing literacy-based instruction in collegiate foreign language programs in 2012 and a publication grant from the Frederick W. Hilles Publication Fund at the Whitney Humanities Center, Yale University, in 2007.
