Dr. Marion Maddox

Biography

Marion Maddox is a leading authority on the intersection of religion and politics in Australia. She holds PhDs in theology from Flinders University (1992) and political philosophy from the University of New South Wales (2000). Maddox has taught Australian politics and religious studies at universities in Australia and New Zealand. From 1999 to 2000, she served as an Australian Parliamentary Fellow, where she interviewed fifty serving and retired federal Members and Senators about their views on faith in public life. This work resulted in her book 'God and Country: Religious Dynamics in Australian Federal Politics' published in Canberra in 2001. Her landmark publication, 'God and Howard: The Rise of the Religious Right in Australian Politics' (2005), has been described as an exemplary case study of the interaction between religion and politics in Australia. In 2014, she published 'Taking God to School: The End of Australia's Egalitarian Education,' which challenges Australians to consider the kind of society they want for the future. This book has been labelled essential reading by critics. Maddox's research interests include the relationship between religion and politics, law, citizenship, religious diversity, religious freedom, democracy, and social inclusion. She is recognized for her contributions to understanding the complexities of religion and its political implications in contemporary society.
