Dr. Marisa Herson

Biography

Marisa Herson is an adjunct senior lecturer at Monash University, specializing in burn surgery and tissue banking. After earning her PhD, she focused on improving patient care through her involvement in research on skin bioengineering and established the University of Sao Paulo Skin Bank with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Marisa served as the President of the Latin American Association of Tissue Banks and contributed to various Brazilian tissue transplant authorities and regulatory bodies before relocating to Australia. Since returning to academia in 2011, she has undertaken several roles in public and professional bodies both locally and internationally. Currently, Marisa is an Associate Professor at Deakin University, primarily focusing on Ethics and Professionalism, and a Senior Lecturer in the Surgery Department at Monash University. She is active in the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration-CBC Committee and the ICCBB-ITTAG Committee. Additionally, she is a member of the World Health Organization Expert Panel on Tissue Donation and has held the position of General Secretary of the World Union of Tissue Banking Associations. Her research interests align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the critical intersections between health, environment, and sustainable practices in the field of tissue banking and organ donation.
