Marisa studied biochemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, obtained her MSc from the Weizmann Institute of Science, and completed her PhD in Biological Chemistry under the supervision of Prof Alex Levitzki at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She undertook postdoctoral studies at the Scripps Research Institute with Prof Steven Reed as an EMBO and HFSP fellow. In 2001, she started her research group in the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge. Her group’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that interface between cell cycle controls and mitotic spindle morphogenesis within the context of cells that divide asymmetrically. They explore how mechanisms govern accurate spindle positioning and chromosomal segregation based on a program that couples spindle pole age with differential fate. Importantly, this program shows remarkable correspondence between unicellular models, such as budding yeast, and animal stem cells.
