Biography

Marisol E. Lopez is an Assistant Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, where she teaches Physiology to dental, medical, and graduate students. Her scholarly research focuses on the barriers that students from underrepresented groups face in pursuing and persisting in higher education, as well as the importance of sense of belonging and student retention. Dr. Lopez investigates the effects of pathway programs designed to increase diversity and the impact of legislation on racial disparities in higher education. Being committed to increasing diversity in STEM healthcare professions, she engages in community involvement and is actively involved in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEIA) in her department and institution. Dr. Lopez's experiences as a Latina and her commitment to equity shape her inclusive teaching approach, striving to provide an accessible learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds. She regularly seeks professional development opportunities to enhance her knowledge and participate in diverse initiatives at local and national levels. Dr. Lopez also mentors students from underrepresented backgrounds and has been involved in various roles to promote DEIA in academic and professional settings.
