Marit Monteiro is a cultural historian at Radboud University specializing in Cultural Religious History. She has been involved as a Principal Investigator in the NWO-funded research project Child Separation: Politics and Practices of Children's Upbringing in Faith-Based Organisations in (Post)Colonial Indonesia from 1808 to 1984. The research team explores how groups of children who were separated from their parents lived within institutions run by Christian and Islamic organizations. It investigates the entanglements of colonial and national politics in the Dutch East Indies and how these practices continued in independent Indonesia. Furthermore, she explores the voices and perspectives of children who are historical actors in these contexts, digitally mapping children's homes to assist families in tracing broken family lines. Monteiro has received several research grants and awards for her work, including the Radboud Science Award in 2021 and the NWO Impact Explorer grant in 2024. She has chaired the scientific advisory board of the Catholic Documentation Center at Radboud University since January 2016 and participates in various advisory boards related to religion, culture, and society.
