Biography

Marius Peelen is a Professor of Sensorimotor Neuroscience at Radboud University, where he leads the Visual Cognitive Neuroscience group. His research investigates the neural basis of the interactions between visual perception and cognition, particularly how the brain extracts meaningful information from complex structured scenes and how these are represented in the visual cortex. His work delves into the ways visual cortex supports cognitive tasks such as visual input processing, visual imagery, working memory, and internally-directed attention. Current investigations explore the synergy of visual perception and visual thinking and the variability among individuals, especially in the context of aging and the efficiency of switching between these cognitive modes. He has held editorial roles, including serving as an editor for Science Advances, and has received significant research funding, including a European Research Council grant in 2017 and a NWO Vici grant for 2024. Peelen actively engages in teaching and has been featured in media for his contributions to understanding visual cognition.
