Marius Wernig is a professor in the Department of Pathology and a courtesy professor in Chemical Systems Biology at Stanford University. He graduated with an M.D. and Ph.D. from the Technical University of Munich, focusing on developmental genetics. Following his medical training, he completed a residency in Neuropathology at the University of Bonn and pursued postdoctoral research at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research/MIT. His research interests include pluripotent stem cell biology and neural cell fate decisions. His laboratory focuses on generating functional neuronal cells from skin fibroblasts, termed induced neuronal (iN) cells, and is investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying induced lineage fate changes. Research in his lab is directed towards applying these findings to develop novel gene-targeting and cell transplantation strategies for treating a variety of monogenetic diseases. Wernig has received numerous awards, including the Ogawa-Yamanaka Stem Cell Prize and the HHMI Faculty Scholar Award, recognizing his contributions to stem cell research and regenerative medicine.
