Marjan van Hagen graduated as a veterinarian for companion animals in 1996. After several years in general practice, she began to combine her clinical work with genetic-epidemiological research at the Department of Companion Animal Medicine of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. A key conclusion from her research is that a rational breeding policy based on kinship, disease frequency, and breeding values can prevent the spread of hereditary issues. After her promotion in 2004, she contributed to the development of policies to improve the health and welfare of animals within various organizations. In March 2016, Marjan was officially recognized as a European Veterinary Specialist in Animal Welfare, Ethics, and Law, and she became a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioral Medicine in the subspecialty of Animal Welfare Science, Ethics, and Law. Since May 1, 2015, she has been working at the Department of Animal Science and Society of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where she is also involved as a veterinarian in the Animal Behavior Clinic. This clinic comprises a small, passionate multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, behavioral biologists, and a psychologist who work together to address all aspects of behavioral problems and develop personalized treatment plans tailored to the needs of both the animal and its owner. In addition to her clinical duties, she engages in teaching bachelor and master veterinary medicine students.
