Biography

Marjolijn Bol is an Associate Professor in Technical Art History at Utrecht University, where she leads the ERC Project 'Dynamics Durable'. Trained as an art historian, her research intersects historical studies of craft, heritage, knowledge, and environment, with a special focus on performative methods, reconstruction, and written sources related to art technology. In 2014, she received a Veni grant for her research on the history of imitation materials in the arts. Her current ERC research project investigates the long-term history of durability in art from the perspective of artisans and patrons. In 2018, she established ArtLab at Utrecht University, a cross-disciplinary space dedicated to the research and teaching of material studies. This initiative brought together various activities focused on technical studies, digital methodologies, citizen science, and cultural heritage. Bol is a member of De Jonge Akademie KNAW (Dutch Young Academy) and serves on the editorial boards of 'Studies in Art & Materiality' and the journal 'Technical Art History'. Recent publications include 'Varnish Glaze' (University of Chicago Press, 2023) and 'Matter Mimesis', co-edited with E.C. Spary (Brill, 2023).
