Biography

Mark Ackerman is the George Herbert Mead Collegiate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His major research area is Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a focus on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). He has published widely on topics concerning HCI and CSCW, investigating areas such as expertise sharing, collaborative information access, online knowledge communities, medical settings, and pervasive environments. A member of the CHI Academy (HCI Fellow) and an ACM Fellow, Ackerman has previously served as a faculty member at the University of California, Irvine, and as a research scientist at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, now CSAIL. Before his academic career, he contributed to the development of home banking systems, created Billboard Top-10 games for the Atari 2600, and worked on the user-interface widget set for the X Window System.
