Biography

Mark Algee-Hewitt’s research combines literary criticism with digital quantitative analyses of literature and textual corpora. His work focuses primarily on the development and transmission of aesthetic and philosophic concepts in long eighteenth-century Britain and Germany. His research interests also include literary forms, poetry, and the Gothic novel, broadly affecting both eighteenth-century and contemporary literary practices. He is the director of the Stanford Literary Lab, leading projects on various topics, utilizing extra-disciplinary discourse in novels as well as narratological theory in short stories and science-fiction world-building. In addition to his literary projects, Mark has collaborated with OECD's Working Group on Bribery to explore the efficacy of public writing in enforcement strategies, and he worked with the Smithsonian Museum of American History on the examination of American celebrity in newspapers. Furthermore, he has had teaching appointments at Columbia University focused on court decisions related to environmental policy.
