Biography

Mark Alznauer specializes in nineteenth-century philosophy, particularly focusing on the works of the German philosopher G. W. F. Hegel. His research interests encompass history, metaphysics, practical philosophy, social theory, and aesthetics. He is the author of 'Hegel’s Theory of Responsibility' (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and has several forthcoming projects, including a systematic interpretation of Hegel’s encyclopedia tentatively titled 'Hegel’s Sole Idea'. His current research includes essays addressing the pragmatist critique of rationalism, Weber’s notion of value-freedom, and the legacy of historical materialism. Alznauer regularly teaches introductory courses in critical theory, existentialism, and the philosophy of religion. He received his B.A. from St. John’s College (Annapolis) and his Ph.D. in Social Thought from the University of Chicago in 2008. Alznauer is also the current President of the Hegel Society of America for the term 2024-2026.
