Biography

Professor Mark Banks is the Head of the Cultural Economy subject area within the School of Culture & Creative Arts at the University of Glasgow. Joining the institution in 2020, he teaches on the MSc in Creative Industries and Cultural Policy while serving as the Research Convenor for the school. Previously, he was the founding Director of the CAMEo Research Institute at the University of Leicester and has held positions at the Open University and Manchester Metropolitan University. His research interests focus on the cultural and creative industries, particularly examining work and employment, culture-economy relations, and social justice. He is particularly engaged in topics related to visual arts, music, and media industries. His current research explores the cultural industries within the broader context of the creative economy, with an emphasis on ecological politics, post-growth ideas, and well-being in transitional economies. He has supervised numerous students keen on researching aspects of cultural policy related to creative economies, with a strong welcome to diverse projects that touch on political, cultural, and environmental theories.
