Dr. Mark Beitel

Biography

Mark Beitel is a Research Scientist at the Child Study Center and an Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Yale University. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and a psychotherapy researcher, having authored and co-authored over 75 scientific publications. His research focuses on the impact of demographic and diagnostic patient variables, therapist technique usage, and patient-therapist interaction on psychotherapy outcomes. Mark has a longstanding interest in treating patients with co-occurring chronic physical pain and opioid dependence, alongside demographic, clinical, and treatment-related correlates of mental health issues. In the past decade, he has been heavily involved in Native American mental health, regularly consulting with Tribal governments on matters of policy and practice. Mark co-directs the American Indian Health program and leads the Native American Psychotherapy Research Project at Yale, addressing the gap in psychotherapy research involving Native American patients. He teaches a course titled Native American Mental Health for undergraduate students and provides seminars for Psychiatry residents. His research interests encompass North American Indians, mental disorders, personality assessment, psychological theory, and psychotherapy.
