Biography

Mark Bernstein is a neurosurgeon and Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, specializing in neuro-oncology. He entered the Neurosurgical Training Program at the University of Toronto in 1976 and spent years at the University of California San Francisco on a CIHR-funded Research Fellowship at the Brain Tumor Research Center. Bernstein became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1984. He focuses his clinical practice on neuro-oncology, with research interests in innovative treatment strategies, outcomes, and medical ethics. In 2003, he obtained a Master of Health Science in Bioethics, and his current research, supported by a CIHR grant, explores bioethics using qualitative methodology. A committed educator, Bernstein has won numerous teaching awards and is dedicated to improving neurosurgical practices in the developing world.
