Biography

Mark S. Blumenkranz, MD, MMS, is the H. J. Smead Professor Emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University. He received his undergraduate degree and master's in Biochemical Pharmacology, followed by his MD from Brown University. After completing an ophthalmic residency at Stanford and a fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, he became a faculty member in 1980. In 1985, he founded the Retinal Fellowship Training Program at the William Beaumont Eye Institute and returned to Stanford in 1992 to lead the vitreoretinal service. He served as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1997 to 2015 and played a pivotal role in planning and fundraising for the Byers Eye Institute, which opened in 2010. Blumenkranz has contributed significantly to various ophthalmology journals and has held leadership roles in several professional organizations, including serving as past president of the American University Professors of Ophthalmology and the Retina Society. His research focuses on innovative vitrectomy techniques, complex retinal detachments, and the diagnostics and treatments of retinal diseases. Blumenkranz co-founded multiple companies in the ophthalmic field, contributing to advancements in medical technologies and treatments.
