Biography

Mark D. Chapman studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) as well as Theology at Trinity College, Oxford, and Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. He served as a Stephenson Fellow in the Department of Biblical Studies at Sheffield University from 1989 to 1991. Since 1992, he has been a lecturer in Systematic Theology at Ripon College Cuddesdon, where he was appointed Vice-Principal in 2002. He was a Reader in Modern Theology at the University of Oxford from 2008 to 2015, and he has held the position of Professor of History Modern Theology at the University of Oxford since 2015. His academic contributions include being the Hensley Henson Lecturer in 2013 and serving as a Canon Theologian at Truro Cathedral in 2016. In 2018, he co-chaired the Meissen Theological Conference. Chapman's research primarily focuses on Historical Systematic Theology, the History of Christianity, and the Study of Religions, with specific interests in Historical Theology since 1750 in Britain, the U.S., and Germany, Ecumenism, Ernst Troeltsch's Liberal Theology, the interplay between History and Theology within Anglicanism, Secularization Theory, Political Social Theory, and the History of Sexuality.
