Dr. Mark Chaves

Biography

Mark Chaves is an Anne Firor Scott Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Duke University. His research primarily focuses on the sociology of religion in the United States, examining how social organization shapes religious life. He directs the National Congregations Study (NCS), which is a nationally representative survey of religious congregations that has been conducted at various intervals since 1998. The findings from the NCS have provided significant insights into different aspects of congregational life and the role of religion in society. His recent publications explore themes related to clergy political action and the intersection of religion and mental health, highlighting the political engagement of religious leaders and their perspectives on mental health treatment.
