Biography

Mark Clague is a musicologist who strives to understand the social impact of the arts in the United States and to share this understanding with students, scholars, and the public. His recent projects focus on the national anthem of the United States, "The Star-Spangled Banner"; diversity in music historiography and education; and the exploration of African-American song. Clague serves as a full professor in musicology and as the Executive Director of the University of Michigan's Arts Initiative. He has held multiple appointments within the University of Michigan, including in American Culture and African American Studies. His scholarship includes a 2022 monograph, "O Say Hear?: Cultural Biography of 'The Star-Spangled Banner'", which has received critical acclaim and led to various speaking engagements.
