Dr. Mark Costa

Biography

Mark Costa is a medical doctor and Associate Research Scientist at the Yale School of Medicine. He earned his MD from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 1990 and completed his residency in Psychiatry in 1992. After pivotal experiences in Brazil as a psychiatrist, including serving as a clinical supervisor and coordinator of a major mental health advocacy organization, Mark moved to the United States. In 2013, he joined the Yale Program Recovery Community Health where he focuses his research on serious mental illness, health disparities, substance use disorders, and social inclusion. His key projects include investigating the experiences of individuals with serious mental illness involved in the criminal justice system and managing initiatives aimed at improving healthcare outcomes for this population. Mark's expertise extends to various sectors within public health, evidenced by his Master’s degree in Public Health, and he actively engages in topics like qualitative research methods, stigma, community health, and health policy. He has collaborated extensively with numerous researchers and is dedicated to contributing to advancements in behavioral health and community engagement.
