Biography

Mark Cruvellier is the Nathaniel Margaret Owings Distinguished Alumni Memorial Professor at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. His academic interests are broadly focused on architectural design and structural architecture, exploring the relationship between form, behavior, and the conceptual basis of structures within architectural contexts. Cruvellier teaches classes that emphasize fundamental structural concepts, covering basic elements of design and overall structural systems. He co-authored several influential books including "Structural Basis of Architecture" and "Model Perspectives: Structure, Architecture, Culture", published by Routledge. As a former chair of the Department of Architecture for 12 years, he played a significant role in the department's direction until June 2017. Prior to joining Cornell, Cruvellier worked in New York City, focusing on structural analysis of some of the city's tallest buildings as well as unique bridge designs in Vancouver, British Columbia. He earned his Ph.D. from McGill University, specializing in computer modeling of tall buildings.
