Biography

Mark Dickinson graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Manchester in 1981 and completed his PhD in 1984. He was appointed a lecturer in the School of Physics and Astronomy in 1989. His research primarily focuses on Laser Physics with a specialization in medical and biological applications of lasers. His recent projects include laser tweezing, blood flow measurements in microcirculation, and laser nerve stimulation for human pain studies, as well as optical coherence tomography for various dental applications. He has collaborated with a number of medical and dental groups and is involved with industrial partners and university spin-off companies. Mark Dickinson is also a key organizer of the Photon Science Institute at the University of Manchester. His research interests encompass medical, dental, and biological applications of lasers and photonics, particularly in therapy and diagnostics. Currently, his main areas of work are Optical Coherence Tomography and Laser Tweezers for human pain stimulation, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through his research activities.
