Biography

Mark Dickinson graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Manchester in 1981 and completed his PhD in 1984, focusing on multi-oscillator ring laser gyroscopes. He joined the School of Physics and Astronomy as a lecturer in 1989. His research spans several areas, with a core focus on Laser Physics, particularly the medical and biological applications of lasers. Recent projects have included laser tweezing, blood flow measurement in microcirculation, laser nerve stimulation in human pain studies, and optical coherence tomography for various dental applications. He has collaborated with numerous medical and dental groups and has been involved with industrial partners, including university spin-offs. He is an author and a key organizer for the Photon Science Institute at the University of Manchester. His research interests predominantly cover medical, dental, and biological applications of lasers and photonics, including their therapeutic and diagnostic uses.
