Biography

Mark Edwards graduated from Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1984 with a BA in Literae Humaniores and completed his doctorate on 'Plotinus and the Gnostics' at the same college in 1988. He served as a Hasker Senior Scholar at Exeter College, Oxford, and as a lecturer in Classics at Balliol College, Oxford from 1988 to 1989. From 1989 to 1992, he held an Esmee Fairbairn Junior Research Fellowship at New College, Oxford, where he completed a BA in Theology in 1990. In 1992, he became a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow at New College and was elected as an Official Student (Tutorial Fellow) in Theology at Christ Church, Oxford in 1993. Edwards has held the title of Associate Professor in Patristics in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford and was appointed Professor of Early Christian Studies in 2014. His research areas include Biblical Studies, Historical and Systematic Theology, the History of Christianity, and the study of Religions, with specific interests in Patristics and Platonism. His editorial work includes general editor of forthcoming entries for the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church and participation on various editorial boards for academic journals.
