Biography

Mark Farrell is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia and a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO, leading the Biogeochemistry Team. He earned his BSc (Hons) and PhD from the University of Wales, Bangor, focusing on novel remediation uses of mixed waste and poor quality composts. His postdoctoral research at Bangor and Lancaster Universities centered on the role of peptides in dissolved organic nitrogen pools affecting plant and microbial nitrogen nutrition. Currently, Mark conducts research on soil organic matter, nitrogen dynamics, and the interactions between microbes and plants, particularly in dryland grain systems. He is leading a scientific component of the National Landcare Programme project on Mixed Cover Crops to enhance soil carbon stocks and nitrogen availability while improving soil health and agronomic productivity. Mark served as Chair for the 2019 International Symposium on Soil Organic Matter in Adelaide and spoke at national workshops on soil carbon policy. He is also an Associate Editor for Soil Research and the Deputy Editor for the European Journal of Soil Science.
